Things To Know Before Applying For a Commercial Driving License

Truck driving is a very lucrative career option for many people who love the thrill of being on the road. It does not cost you much and requires no fancy college degree to qualify as a truck driver. You would be surprised to know that there are many professional truck drivers who earn more than their white collar peers. The starting salary for any normal truck driver excluding medical benefits is around $40,000 per year which tends to go up as his level of experience increases.
Before you decide to become a full time truck driver here are certain things which you should take note of:
Love for Driving
You got to love driving if you are aspiring to become a commercial truck driver. If you are someone who takes a break every hour during a holiday break, then reconsider your options. You shall be required to deliver goods as per schedules which you need to meet. This basically means that you shall get little or no time to rest during the drive.
Patience is the Key
Heavy vehicle driving lessons might teach you about the technicalities of the job but there are certain qualities like patience, which is very important to ensure that you can drive for long hours and don’t get irritated while waiting at terminals and loading docks.
Safety First
Most of us have seen the cargo trucks on the highway we all know they are nothing short of a beast. No matter how experienced you are with your heavy vehicle driving lessons, you can never take road safety rules for granted. One small mistake and it can prove fatal for a number of people.
Self-discipline
When you are working on the roads, you would obviously have no boss to poke you around with your deadline. You need to have enough self-discipline so that you can finish the job in time and as per instructions. You also should be reasonably comfortable to drive along for long stretches without any companion, which can be quite taxing for a normal human being.
Good Physical Condition
Besides a practical course in heavy vehicle driving lessons you also need to be in good physical condition in order to have a successful career as a truck driver. By good physical condition, we do not mean, you have to be a body builder but given the fact that you have to endure extreme physical strain to stay in this industry, it is expected that you have a reasonably good physic with no problems like high BP or anxiety which can affect your career drastically.
Say No to Addiction
It’s ok to take a few puffs inside your vehicle, but as a commercial driver you are strictly prohibited from consuming alcohol during duty hours. The limit of alcohol intake for a CDL holder is .04 which is basically half of the normal DUI level. Even if you are caught with alcohol level below 0.04, you would still be suspended for 24 hours from duty which would harm your career in a big way. Getting caught with alcohol level above 0.04 would mean absolute end of your driving career.
Besides these factors consider your family situations, as the life of a truck driver can be quite hard. There might be periods where you would not get to see your family for months. Make sure you and your family is prepared for such an extreme lifestyle.
