Kurtas & Sherwanis
This is the idea that instantly pops into anyone’s mind when you think of Indian dresses for men. Though modernization has almost eliminated the difference between these two dresses, like any Indian dress both has its unique identity.
Kurta is a collarless shirt which is worn for formal occasions. It is grand and is made from rich looking materials and has intricate work. Sherwani is generally an overcoat that goes on top of a Kurta. These dresses make you look taller than you really are since they are buttoned till your knee!
Dhoti/Lungi
Yet another very popular Indian ethnic wear for men, the Dhoti is basically a piece of cloth 4-6 feet in length. It is draped around the hip and can be worn till the ankle or can be folded up till the knee when doing laborious work. Dhotis are let down the full length as a mark of respect and when at functions. Dhotis have various names and the more common form is called the Lungi.
The Dhoti or Lungi makes more sense than trousers in a hot and humid country such as India where it can get real sweaty and uncomfortable down under!
Headgear
There are many types of headgear worn by Indians – for religious purposes, out of respect or for a more functional purpose. The Peta is worn for style and for occasions while a Dastar or turban for religious beliefs. The Rajasthani Safa is more practical in approach as it helps during sandstorms.
