Sowmya (Sudha Iyengar), has been learning vocal Carnatic Music since early childhood from various Gurus. She received advanced training from Smt.Akhila Krishnan, a very senior Carnatic vocalist from New Delhi, India. She has performed and competed in several competitions and won numerous awards including the first prize in Sangeethayan?s All India Music competition (1992). She has performed regularly in the Yuva Vani section of the All India Radio. She has also given many public concerts in India, which include the Sahithya Kala Parishad?s 8th Yuva Mahotsava (1993). Sowmya moved to Miami, Florida in 1994 and continued her musical journey by singing regularly during various cultural and religious occasions. She has also given concerts and sung for dance arangetrams in the South Florida region. She also started giving vocal carnatic music lessons to students at all levels from beginners to advanced. In May 2007, Sowmya established The Carnatic Music School, to continue teaching aspiring students in the South Florida region. Her students in South Florida perform regularly at various programs in the South Florida region. She is also proficient in teaching Sthothras like Ganesha Pancharatnam, Kanakadhara Sthothram, Krishnashtakam, Rudrashtakam, etc. and light classical utsava krithis that are sung at various religious functions like Varanamayiram, Srinivasa Kalyanam songs, Meenakshi Kalyana Songs, Harivarasanam, etc. and Bhajans on various Gods. Sowmya moved to the Bay Area in June 2015, where she is continuing to teach music. Currently she is conducting classes in San Ramon, CA.
