From the Business:A non-profit organization dedicated to providing basic education, nutrition, healthcare and clean water solutions to underprivileged communities in India and the USA. Amrita-Seattle was founded in 2010 by Drs. Sujit and Sampa Pal of Seattle, Washington on the premise that rural communities in remote regions should not remain neglected from education, health care, and access to clean water. We started our work in deep rural West Bengal, and then expanded out to the high Himalayas in India and Nepal. Currently we are working on setting up education and environmental awareness projects in rural communities in Lesotho, Kenya, and Cameroon. Our aim is to reach out to all these communities which do not get adequate support and attention through government agencies, larger non-profits or other programs. We partner in the field through local non-profits who have a proven track-record for working within their community. Amrita-Seattle actively recruits volunteers for its domestic and international project under its Volunteers without Borders chapter. We offer diverse international volunteer travel programs to create more environmentally and culturally sensitive travel opportunities that will hold long-term sustainability for the indigenous communities.Read more

From the Business:Tasveer’s first screening was held at The Elliot Bay Book Company during Pride Month 2002, and since then, Tasveer has become an arts and culture fixture in the Seattle and Eastside area. Each year it produces three major festivals–the South Asian Film Festival; the South Asian International Documentary Film Festival; and Aaina, a festival celebrating South Asian community. Tasveer also organizes and partners with numerous other organizations throughout the year. Since 2002, Tasveer has shown over 800 films, has welcomed over 15,000 audience members to its events, and has empowered over 100 women to share their life experiences onstage in Yoni Ki Baat. Farah Nousheen and Rita Meher founded Tasveer in March 2002 in Seattle, soon after 9/11/2001. Troubled by the stereotyped and highly prejudicial images of South Asians depicted in the mainstream media at that time, they sought to dispel those mischaracterizations by giving South Asians a chance to speak for themselves. Each year it produces three major festivals–the South Asian Film Festival; the South Asian International Documentary Film Festival; and Aaina, a festival celebrating South Asian community. Tasveer also organizes and partners with numerous other organizations throughout the year.
