Yoga is a physical, mental, and spiritual discipline that began in India many years ago. Archaeologists have found several seals during the excavation of the Indus Valley Civilization sites that show figures in positions similar to yoga or meditation poses. The time frame of the Indus Valley Civilization is between 3,300 to 1,300 BCE, and even though these figures seem to show a kind of precursor of yoga practice, they do not show any real evidence of relation between the ancient way to practice and the present way. Although we cannot learn much more about the ancient yoga practice in the Indus Valley, we can turn our sights to one of the first movements that plays a part in how we have come to know yoga. It is the Shramana (Sanskrit srama?a ?????) source, dating from around the 6th century BCE. Traditionally, a Shramana is a person who renounces the world and leads an ascetic life for the purpose of spiritual development and liberation which was the same of the first yogis and yoginis. This suggests that yoga has been practised since ancient times. The purpose of yoga is to obtain the perfect state of tranquillity and awakening through meditation. Many schools of yoga have been developed, each of them with a specific system to reach the same purpose or goal. Three types Yoga Karma Yoga: yoga of action and service, Bhakti Yoga: devotional yoga, Ajna Yoga: yoga of knowledge.
