About Valluvan Tamil Academy

Valluvan Tamil Academy is dedicated to teaching the Tamil language to children in the United States. Volunteer-run, the school is based in Northern Virginia. The school’s primary activities revolve around our weekly classes, which are held on Saturdays from 1:30-3:30 P.M. In addition, our volunteers also organize and promote activities and events that provide the students with a forum to demonstrate and apply their in-class learning. For the last 12 years, volunteers have been dedicating their time and efforts in teaching children in the area. Classes have been held in public libraries, private homes and other venues. As the demand for Tamil instruction has grown the school has also grown. Students are assigned to courses based upon their age and current knowledge of Tamil. Children who complete our basic courses should be qualified to sit for exams administered by the Tamil Virtual Academy (“TVA”). The TVA is a Tamil language institute formed in Chennai with the help of Tamil Nadu Government to help Tamil education on the web. It conducts standardized exams in Tamil. Our students have the option to sit for the TVA exams at the end of the year. Successful performance in the exams will result in a certificate from the TVA assessing the student’s ability in that level. Pursuant to our current structure a student in the Level 3 course should be able to sit for the basic module of the TVA exam (equivalent to Second Standard/Grade Tamil class in Tamil Nadu). Intermediate/advanced students (level 4 and above) will be learning from both ATA and TVA materials to develop their Tamil fluency.

- Nilai 1 Class - Level 1
  
  Nilai 1 class is for children aged 5-6 with no prior Tamil knowledge. School Grade 1 is the right criteria for this class. The lessons cover Tamil Letters, conversation, stories, songs, a few words currently in use and animation with audio and video facilities. Mastering 12 vowels and 18 consonants is the main objective of this level.

- Nilai 2 Class - Level 2
  
  Nilai 2 class is for Children above age 7. Nilai 1 level knowledge is expected as a prerequisite. Attending 2nd grade in school is the right criteria for this class. The lessons cover Tamil Letters, words, small phrases, conversation, stories, songs. At this level, there is additional focus on reading and writing. Mastering uyirmey letters (vowel+consonant) from to is the main objective of this level.

- Nilai 3 Class - Level 3
  
  Nilai 3 class for children 8 and above. Nilai 2 level knowledge is expected as a prerequisite. The lessons cover Tamil Letters, words, small phrases, conversation, stories, songs. More focus on reading and writing is given. Mastering all uyirmey letters (vowel+consonant) is the main objective of this level. After completing this level, kids are expected to have the necessary knowledge to pass TVA basic module exam. More focus on writing/reading small words and sentences.

  Nilai 4 class is an intermediate class conducted for children with the basic Tamil proficiency. Nilai 3 level knowledge is a must as a prerequisite. therwise, children must have learned Tamil elsewhere and should be equally proficient. The lessons cover Tamil words, small phrases, sentences, conversation, stories, essays with grammar. Knowing the basic Tamil grammar is the main objective of this level. Towards this objective, more focus on reading/writing will be given. Also nouns, verbs, gender etc will be covered.

  Nilai 5 class is an intermediate-advanced class conducted for children passed Nilai-4. Otherwise, children must have learned Tamil elsewhere and should be equally proficient. Curriculum is a continuation of Nilai-4. The objective of this level is for the kids to be able to have good reading skills; simple paragraph writing and guided essay writing; and, to converse well in Tamil and understand oral instructions.

Curriculum is a continuation of Nilai-5.
