Goddess Chandraghanta is Goddess Durga's third form, which is worshipped on the third day of Tritiya October 05, 2024,Saturday of Navaratri. Her name means "one with a half-moon shaped like a bell" on her forehead. She is the symbol of bravery, courage, and peace. She is also known as Chandrakhanda, Vrikahvahini, or Chandrika.
The Origin of Goddess Chandraghanta
Goddess Chandraghanta is the married form of Goddess Parvati, who was born as the daughter of King Himavan and Queen Mena. After performing severe penance to win Lord Shiva as her husband, Parvati married him and adorned herself with his ornaments. One of them was a crescent moon that she wore on her forehead, which gave her the name Chandraghanta.
The Iconography of Goddess Chandraghanta
Goddess Chandraghanta is depicted as a beautiful woman with ten arms and three eyes. She rides on a lion or a tiger and carries several weapons and objects. She holds a trident, a sword, a mace, a lotus, a bow, an arrow, a rosary, and a kamandalu (water pot). She also makes the gesture of blessing and knowledge with two hands. She has a golden complexion and wears red clothes and ornaments.
The Worship of Goddess Chandraghanta
Goddess Chandraghanta is worshipped on the third day October 05, 2024, Saturday of Navaratri, which falls in the month of Ashwin (September-October) according to the Hindu calendar. On this day, devotees offer the goddess prayers, flowers, fruits, sweets, and milk. They also perform rituals such as abhishekam (bathing), alankaram (decoration), arati (waving of lamps), and bhajan (singing). They also observe fasting and abstain from non-vegetarian food, onion, garlic, and alcohol.
The Legends of Goddess Chandraghanta
Several legends are associated with Goddess Chandraghanta, one related to her role in the battle against the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha. According to this legend, when the demons invaded heaven and drove away the gods, they sent their messenger, Sugriva, to ask Goddess Parvati to marry them. Parvati refused and sent her emissary Ambika to fight them. Ambika took the form of Goddess Chandraghanta and led the army of goddesses against the demons. She fought bravely and killed many demons with her weapons and bell sound. The Goddess also helped Goddess Kali slay the demon Raktabija by collecting his blood drops in her kamandalu. Finally, she assisted Goddess Durga in killing Shumbha and Nishumbha and restoring peace in heaven.
