Introduction to Goddess Katyayani- Navratri Sixth Day Goddess

Goddess Katyayani is one of the nine forms of Goddess Durga worshipped on 08th October 2024, Tuesday during the Navratri festival. She is the sixth manifestation of Durga and the slayer of the demon Mahishasura. She is also known as Mahishasuramardini, the one who killed Mahishasura. She is a powerful and fierce goddess who represents courage, strength, and victory. She is also a benevolent and compassionate goddess who grants the wishes of her devotees, especially those who seek marriage or marital bliss.

The Origin of Goddess Katyayani Mata:

Goddess Katyayani was born out of the collective anger of the gods, tormented by the evil deeds of Mahishasura, a buffalo-headed demon who had conquered heaven and earth. The gods approached Lord Vishnu for help, who, along with Lord Shiva, Lord Brahma, and other gods, emitted flames from their eyes that formed a mountain of light. From this light emerged Goddess Katyayani, radiant as a thousand suns, with four arms, three eyes, and black hair. The gods gave her various weapons and a lion as her mount. She then headed to the battlefield to confront Mahishasura and his army.

Devi Katyayani Iconography:

Goddess Katyayani is depicted as a beautiful and majestic woman with a golden complexion. She wears a red saree and a green blouse adorned with jewels and flowers. Maa Katyayani has four arms, carrying a sword, a lotus, an abhaya mudra (gesture of fearlessness), and a varada mudra (gesture of boon-giving). She rides a lion, symbolizing her courage and power, and has three eyes representing the sun, the moon, and the fire. The Goddess’s forehead bears a red bindi (dot), which signifies her divine energy.

The Worship of Goddess Katyayani Devi:

Katyayani Maa is worshipped on the sixth day October o8, 2024, Tuesday of Navratri, which falls in the month of Ashwin (September-October) or Chaitra (March-April) according to the Hindu calendar. On October 8, 2024, Tuesday, devotees wake up early and bathe in the holy river or at home. They then wear clean clothes and offer prayers to Goddess Katyayani. They also offer honey as bhog (food offering) to the goddess, which is believed to please her and bring sweetness to life. They also offer the goddess flowers, incense, lamps, fruits, sweets, and coconut. They chant mantras, sing hymns, and perform aarti (ritual waving of lamps) to the goddess.

The Legends of Goddess Katyayani:

  • Many legends are associated with Goddess Katyayani and her deeds. One of them is the story of her battle with Mahishasura. According to this story, Mahishasura was a powerful demon who had obtained a boon from Lord Brahma that any man or god could not kill him. He became arrogant and started to oppress the gods and humans. He even invaded heaven and drove away the gods from their abode. The gods then created Goddess Maa Katyayani from their anger and gave her weapons and a lion to fight Mahishasura. Maa Katyayani challenged Mahishasura to a duel and fought him for nine days and nights. Mahishasura changed his form many times to escape from her attacks, but she matched him every time. Finally, he assumed the form of a buffalo and charged at her with full force. She then jumped on his back and pinned him down with her foot. She then pierced his neck with her sword and cut off his head. Thus, she killed Mahishasura and restored peace and order in the universe.
  • Another legend is the story of her worship by the gopis (cowherd girls) of Vrindavan. According to this story, the gopis were ardent devotees of Lord Krishna and wanted him as their husband. To fulfill their desire, they performed a vow (vrata) for a month in honor of Goddess Katyayani. They would wake up before dawn and bathe in the Yamuna River. They would then make an image of Katyayani Maa with sand or clay on the river bank and worship her with flowers, fruits, sandalwood paste, and other offerings. They would also sing and dance in praise of the goddess. On the last day of their vrata, Lord Krishna appeared before them and played with them as their beloved. He also stole their clothes while they were bathing in the river and asked them to come out naked to get them back. The gopis felt shy but obeyed him out of love. He then returned their clothes and blessed them with his grace.
