Goddess Mahagauri- Navratri Eighth Day Goddess of Navadurga
Goddess Mahagauri is the eighth form of Navadurga, the nine manifestations of Goddess Durga. She is worshipped on the eighth day October 10, 2024, Thursday of Navratri, the nine nights of celebration in honor of the divine feminine. Mahagauri is also known as Shwetambardhara, which means the one who wears white clothes. She is the goddess of purity, beauty, and grace. The Goddess has the power to fulfill all the desires of her devotees and remove all their sufferings.
The Origin of Devi Mahagauri
There are two stories regarding the origin of Devi Mahagauri. According to one legend, Goddess Parvati performed a severe penance to get Lord Shiva as her husband. During this, she got covered with dirt and dust, which turned her skin into a dark complexion. Lord Shiva was pleased by her devotion and promised to marry her. To clean Parvati’s body off the accumulated dirt, Lord Shiva let the holy waters of Ganga flow from his matted hair and wash Parvati's body. The sacred waters cleansed all her dirt, making her fair and radiant. Parvati was then called Mahagauri, which means extremely fair.
According to another legend, Goddess Parvati took the form of Kalaratri to kill the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha, who had conquered the three worlds and oppressed the gods and sages. She peeled off her golden skin and became dark as night, with a terrifying appearance. Kalaratri mounted on a donkey and rode to the battlefield, where she fought with the demons and their army. The Goddess killed many demons with her sword and vajra and finally slayed Shumbha and Nishumbha with her bare hands. After that, she regained her original form of Mahagauri, which was as bright as lightning.
The Iconography of Mata Mahagauri
Mata Mahagauri is depicted as a fair-skinned woman with four arms and three eyes. She wears white clothes and ornaments and has long black hair. She holds a trident and a damaru (a small drum) in her left hand and shows the gestures of fearlessness (abhaya) and boon-giving (varada) in her right hand. The Goddess rides on a white bull or an ox as her mount. She has a calm and serene expression on her face.
The Worship of Maa Mahagauri
Maa Mahagauri is worshipped on the eighth day October 10, 2024, Thursday of Navratri with devotion and reverence. Her favorite color is white, so devotees wear white clothes and offer white flowers to her. They also offer her coconut, rice, sugar, milk, honey, ghee, and sesame seeds as prasad (food offering). Devotees light a lamp with ghee or oil and incense sticks before her idol or picture. They chant the Goddess’s names, mantras, prayers, and hymns to invoke her blessings. The devotees also perform aarti (ritual waving of light) to her with a camphor lamp.
The Legends of Devi Mahagauri
- Many legends associated with Devi Mahagauri demonstrate her power and compassion. Some of them are:
- Once, a king named Chandrasena was a great devotee of Goddess Durga. He used to worship her every day with flowers and fruits. One day, he was attacked by a demon named Dhoomralochana, who wanted to capture him and his kingdom. The king fought bravely but was overpowered by the demon's army. He prayed to Goddess Durga for help. She then appeared as Mahagauri and killed Dhoomralochana with her trident. The Goddess also blessed the king with victory and prosperity.
- Once, a girl named Shailaputri was born into a royal family. She was beautiful and virtuous but had a dark complexion due to a curse in her previous birth. Many suitors rejected her because of her skin color. Shailaputri felt sad and worshipped Goddess Durga to get a fair complexion. She performed a rigorous fast for nine days and offered white flowers to the goddess. On the ninth day October 10, 2024, Thursday, Goddess Durga appeared as Mahagauri and granted her wish. She also gave her a boon that she would marry Lord Shiva in her next birth.
Planet controlled by Mahagauri Mata
Mahagauri Mata is said to control the planet Rahu, the moon's north node. Rahu is known to cause sudden changes, illusions, and confusion in life and give innovation, creativity, and intelligence. Rahu is also associated with spirituality, occultism, and foreign travel. By worshipping Goddess Mahagauri, one can appease Rahu and get his favorable results. One can also overcome the adverse effects of Rahu's transit (Rahu Kaal) or dasha (period) by invoking her grace.
The Significance of Maa Mahagauri
Maa Mahagauri is the symbol of purity, beauty, and grace. She represents the purest form of energy that sustains the universe. She cleanses the mind and soul of her devotees and removes all their sins and impurities. The goddess grants them peace, happiness, and prosperity. She also bestows them with wisdom, knowledge, and enlightenment. The Goddess is the epitome of simplicity, humility, and devotion.
