Gurdwara Sahib Riverside is also known as Sikh Temple Riverside is located 55 miles east of Los Angeles. The Gurdwara literally translates to "door to the Guru". A Gurdwara is the Sikh place of worship. It houses the Guru Granth Sahib. A Gurdwara acts as a community center, teaching hall, and a place to hold religious ceremonies. The Gurdwara also has a kitchen where food is cooked and given freely to anyone who visits the Gurdwara it is also called Langar. All Sikhs give a proportion of there income to the Gurdwara so that the Langar can continue to feed all who need to be fed. People of all religious backgrounds or of no religious faith are welcome to these shrines. Sikhism is founded on the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev and the ten successive Sikh Gurus in fifteenth century Punjab. It is the fifth-largest organized religion in the world. This system of religious philosophy and expression has been traditionally known as Gurmat or the Sikh Dharma. Sikhism originated from the word Sikh which in turn comes from the Sanskrit root sisya meaning "disciple" or "learner", or siska meaning "instruction".
