The goal of Ayurvedic constitution assessment is an attempt on the part of the practitioner to understand the disease or nature of imbalance of biological forces of – Vata, Pitta, Kapha. The information gathered from an assessment allows one to create balance and harmony, thus preventing the onset of symptoms of the disease. If the person is already sick, Ayurveda helps to create optimum environment in the body mind system by offering various tools of this science for spontaneous healing to take place. So this science offers both preventive care as well as therapeutic treatment for an established disease.

According to the principles of Ayurveda, diet for each individual is unique depending upon his/her unique constitution and imbalance. Ayurveda follows the simple concept that nothing is right for everyone and everything is right for someone. Ayurveda utilizes six tastes to treat various imbalances. These are – sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent, and astringent. In addition to this, food combination, quantity of food, climate, season, time of the day, state of digestive fire, and rules of intake of food are also taken into consideration. Ayurveda believes in fresh home cooked organic food prepared with loving hands. On the other hand micro waved, canned, frozen, genetically engineered, left over, and stale food does not match with the principles of this science. Ayurveda believes our system is meant to consume fresh and natural food. Our system may or may not assimilate and metabolize stale and unnatural food and is likely to produce toxins in the body if not accepted by the body mind system.

Since herbs are part of Mother Nature they are very safe for human consumption to correct imbalance. Herbalism is one of Ayurvedas most powerful methods of treatment. Herbs are used in various combinations depending upon the imbalance of energies. Any part of a plant can be used – root, stem, leaf, flower, seed, bud. Plants are used in the form of powder, pills, infusion, decoctions, jellies, juice, medicated vines, teas, medicated ghee, and medicated oils. Besides ingesting the herbs orally they can be instilled in various cavities of the body in the form of nasal, eye, and ear drops.

From an Ayurvedic point of view, certain imbalances are directly connected to the modern fast paced lifestyle. Aggression, competition, job related stress, alcohol, drugs, fast food, over indulgence in sex, sedentary lifestyle, and lack of exercise directly link to certain diseases. Ayurveda emphasizes the need to make certain adjustments in lifestyle and food. Ayurveda recommends the practice of yoga, meditation, sound therapy, and aromatherapy to calm down the mind and it also teaches Ayurvedic cooking to add virtuous quality in food.

Panchkarma is an ancient Ayurvedic program of extensive detoxification that is depletive but nurturing in nature. The goal of this program is the withdrawal of toxins from the deeper tissues and subtle channels. Effective panchkarma can result in a wide range of benefits enhancing the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of life. Panchkarma is a process that takes place over a period of time. After initial consultation, a preparatory phase of one week may be taken to prepare the body at home during with a simple diet, specific herbs, medicated ghee, and oils may be recommended. This is followed by a deep tissue detoxification process in the clinic for a period of six to ten days. Each session lasts for two to three hours daily. Body is oleated using warm dosha specific medicated oils. A light and simple diet is maintained to give full rest to the digestive tract. This procedure is followed by medicated steam to loosen the toxins and open the subtle channels. Toxins and aggravated doshas are directed towards the empty digestive track and get eliminated by giving purgation. In addition to this, other procedures administered during panchkarma are therapeutic vomiting, nasal administration of oil, therapeutic medicated enema, and bloodletting to eliminate aggravated doshas and toxins. A rejuvenative plan is then suggested.

In Ayurveda, pulse diagnosis is called Nari Vigyan. Pulse is a subtle manifestation of universal consciousness pulsating through a person’s constitution. It is a very important and sensitive instrument used to detect which life force is out of balance. It has both diagnostic and prognostic value.

Various techniques are offered to handle stress. Certain breathing techniques area very powerful to eliminate toxins of the disease and negative energy form the body mind system.

Tongue is a highly important index in Ayurvedic science. It has great diagnostic value. It not only reveals information about a patient’s constitution but also indicates imbalance of energies. Presence of scallop, froth, tremors, bumps, cracks, coating, color, etc… indicate the presence of toxins, condition of digestion, digestive fire, state of emotions, and damage to system or an organ of the body.
