Ramana Indrakumar initially started his training on the Mridangam at the age of 11 under Vidwan Sri. Vasuthevan Rajalingam. Although he has completed his Mridangam Arangetram and has accompanied many artists on the mridangam, his interest towards the ghatam led him to learn the ghatam on his own by watching great ghatam artists from the past and the present. Through his hard work, Ramana is now a regular ghatam artist that has performed in many venues across North America and Europe with many veteran artists and percussionists such as Sri. T.N. Seshagopalan, Sri. O.S. Thyagarajan, Chitraveena Sri. Ravikiran, Neyveli Sri. Santhanagoplan, Sri. Ganesh and Sri. Kumaresh, Sri. S. Shashank, Sri. P. Unnikrishnan, Kunnakudi Sri. Balamurali Krishna, Sri. S. Saketharaman, Sikkil Sri. Gurucharan, Smt. Nithyasree Mahadevan, Sri. Rajesh Vaidhya, Vittal Sri. Ramamurthy, Mysore Sri. H.N. Bhaskar, Sri. V.V.S. Murari, Sri. B.U. Ramana has worked with world class musicians & composers in many projects and has participated in many national & international festivals. He is the Founder & Director of Chandam – Institute of Percussive Studies which was established in 2003 and is currently teaching the Mridangam, Ghatam and other percussion instruments in Toronto, Pennsylvania, California and Alberta.
